This terrible epiphany was dropped on me like a cartoon anvil last week while watching a Ted Talk. She is a successful radio host, life coach and has studied how to get people what they want. Of course her name escapes me but I digress.
I sat there waiting with baited breath for my next dose of inspiration and BAM! She said what I have felt for so long about so many things but thought something was wrong with me.
She said ‘you are never going to feel like it. If you wait for your feelings to come before you go after a goal or new pursuit, you will never do it. You are never going to feel like getting out of bed earlier, or running that extra mile, or taking the class, or going to the therapist – you just have to do it. Momentum will come after you start taking action but your feelings will lag far behind.’ Paraphrased.
Wow. I always thought something was wrong with me that I wouldn’t ‘feel like’ doing things. But in fact that should be no determinant in what I do or don’t do.
So folks – our excuses are at their limit – we can have whatever we want- but we are never going to feel like doing the work to get there.
I hope this releases you and strangely inspires you because there is nothing wrong with you when you lose motivation. It’s normal. You just have to push through and do it anyway.
